16 weeks of sleep restriction - Natural Sleep

16 weeks of sleep restriction

After 16 weeks—4 months—of dedicated sleep restriction, I've achieved a remarkable transformation in my sleep patterns. When I began this journey, I was averaging just 3.4 hours of sleep per night. Today, I am proud to report that I now average 7.2 hours of sleep per night. This journey has been long and challenging, but it has been immensely rewarding.

The Golden Standard: Sleep Restriction and CBT-I

Sleep restriction, a cornerstone of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), has played a crucial role in my progress. While sleep restriction alone isn’t a cure-all, it is often considered the gold standard in CBT-I for its effectiveness in regulating sleep patterns. This technique involves limiting the time spent in bed to the actual amount of sleep you are getting, gradually increasing it as your sleep improves.

A Comprehensive Approach

However, sleep restriction was just one part of my journey. Recognizing that lifestyle and mental well-being significantly impact sleep, I made several changes to support my goal of achieving better rest:

  1. Taking a Break from Work: During these 16 weeks, I stopped working to reduce stress and focus entirely on my health. This allowed me to create a calm and controlled environment conducive to healing.

  2. Vipassana Meditation Course: I spent 10 days at a Vipassana meditation course, which helped me reconnect with my inner self and foster a deeper sense of peace. This practice emphasized the importance of observing bodily sensations and responding to them mindfully.

  3. Slowing Down and Energizing Activities: I consciously slowed down my daily activities, focusing on those that generated energy and made me feel good. This included gentle exercise, spending time in nature, and engaging in hobbies that I enjoy.

  4. Mindful Decision-Making: I learned to listen to my body’s sensations to gauge my desire to engage in activities rather than doing them out of obligation. This mindful approach helped reduce unnecessary stress and allowed me to prioritize my well-being.

The Impact: No More Sleeping Pills

Perhaps the most significant aspect of my journey has been eliminating sleeping pills. After 12 years of relying on them nightly, I am now free from this dependency. Achieving 7.2 hours of natural sleep each night without medication feels like an extraordinary accomplishment.

Reflecting on the Journey

This 16-week journey has been transformative. It has taught me the importance of patience, self-care, and listening to my body. The path to restful sleep is not straightforward, but with dedication and the right strategies, it is achievable.

Is This a Big Achievement?

From my perspective, this is a monumental achievement. I am tremendously grateful to my body for its resilience and support throughout this process. Overcoming long-term sleep issues and medication dependency is no small feat. Whether you view this as a big achievement or not, it has profoundly impacted my life, and I am incredibly thankful.

Final Thoughts

If you’re struggling with sleep issues, know that there is hope. Combining sleep restriction with a holistic approach that addresses lifestyle, stress management, and mindfulness can lead to significant improvements. Be patient with yourself and listen to your body—it can guide you toward better health and well-being.
