I've just wrapped up week 13 of diligently tracking my sleep, and I’m excited to share my progress. This week, I averaged 6.35 hours of sleep per night! Reflecting on my first week, where I averaged only 3.64 hours, it's clear that the changes I've implemented have made a significant difference.
How I Improved My Sleep
When I started this journey, I struggled with getting enough restful sleep. My first step was to consistently track my sleep patterns using my Sleep Diary, which is now available on Amazon. Here’s how I did it:
-
Daily Sleep Tracking: I recorded my sleep and wake times on a half-hour basis.
- Asleep: I filled in the box with a 1.
- In Bed, Not Sleeping: I filled in the box with a 0.
- Not Asleep, Out of Bed: I left the cells empty.
- Weekly Averages: At the end of each week, I added up all the hours I slept and divided by 7 to get my average sleep hours. I did the same for the total time spent in bed.
- Sleep Efficiency: By dividing the average time I slept by the average time spent in bed, I calculated my sleep efficiency percentage.
Key Strategies That Worked for Me
- Consistent Bedtime Routine: Establishing a relaxing bedtime routine helped signal my body that it was time to wind down.
- Limiting Screen Time: Reducing screen exposure at least an hour before bed improved my ability to fall asleep.
- Mindfulness and Relaxation: Incorporating mindfulness exercises and relaxation techniques before bed enhanced my sleep quality.
The Power of the Sleep Diary
My Sleep Diary has been instrumental in my journey to better sleep. It allowed me to:
- Identify Patterns: By tracking my sleep, I was able to see patterns and make necessary adjustments.
- Set Goals: Seeing my progress motivated me to set realistic sleep goals.
- Stay Accountable: Writing down my sleep habits kept me accountable and focused on improving my sleep.
